Biography: Lila Samari
Born in 1950 in Tehran Lila Samari studied at the Tehran College of Decorative Art. Upon the completion of her BA degree she went to Paris where she did a master’s program at the Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Arts Decoratifs. She then returned to Tehran to teach at the Fine Arts University of Tehran. Since 2000 Samari has been acting as the director of the Haft Samar Gallery in Tehran. Lila Samari has specialized in hand woven textiles and tapestry making which she has been teaching and exhibiting since 1978. Samari sets out to superimpose conflicting fibers and weaves on to each other, forever thriving in their contrasts. As she weaves her way through her tapestries she reaches heights of contrast in color, form, technique, and ultimately in the fibers she uses. This artist has been highly inspired by traditional Iranian gilim and carpet designs to which brings a new perspective by the juxtaposition of old and new elements. In this novelty she seeks to wed the past to the present in the perfection of Persian weaves. Lila Samari is presently living and working in Tehran.
