Biography: Saeed Shahlapour

Born in 1944 in Iran, Shahlapour graduated from the Tehran University of Fine Arts in sculpture in 1980. One of Iran’s leading sculptors today, Saeed Shahlapour’s personal life is as intriguing as the flowing curves of his works. This artist has had numerous stages not only in his works but also in his life and today his sculptures, paintings, sketches and buildings speak of these stages for themselves. Though a simple man in his appearance, Shahlapour is one of the most interesting Iranian artists one meets today. He is a man who believes in life and in people with a passion-such passion that he has been imprisoned for his beliefs both under the Iranian monarchy of the Pahlavis and under the Islamic Republic of Iran and yet each time he has been able to rise and move forward with an ever stronger passion for life. As his life changed phases so too did his works undergo the same change and we can witness these changes in his wooden totems, bronze distorted angels and aluminum curves. Likewise Shahlapour’s sketches and paintings portray the secret side of life, one in which beauty and the grotesque meet to highlight the truth of our existence in a sub-human realm. Saeed Shahlapour has taught at Iranian universities for years. He has also exhibited his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and he has led the Iranian Sculpture Biennial to a new era of bloom. Shahlapour is presently living and working in Kelardasht, Iran.
