Biography: Mokarrameh Ghanbari
Born in 1925, in the village of Darikandeh, Mokarrameh Ghanbari was a self made artist inspired by the village life around her. Although she never received any official art training she went on to recieve various national and international prizes. She began painting at the ripe age of 63 when she first came across some paintings belonging to her son. Inspired by what she saw she was inexplicably drawn to trying her own hand at painting. As she set herself to drawing what inspired her both in the nature and in the village around her art dealers in Tehran came to learn of her talent. In 1995, she held her first solo exhibit at the Seyhoun Gallery in Tehran which was met with much enthusiasm and interest by art lovers. In 2001, she was awarded an honorary certificate at the Conference of the Foundation of Iranian Women's Studies in Stockholm, Sweden, and was named the year's exemplary woman. Furthermore, she was named the "Female Painter of 2001 Swedish National Museum. Later, Iranian filmmaker Ebrahim Mokhtari went on to make a documentary film about the life and works of the artist entitled Mokarrameh, Her Memories and Dreams. Mokarrameh Ghanbari died at the age of 77 and is presently buried in the courtyard of her house.
